Montgomery Co Bicentennial Planning Moves Forward

Tue, 09 Mar 2021 17:28:39 CST
Preparations continue for the Montgomery County Bicentennial Celebration. The rescheduled opening event set for April tenth has the potential to take advantage of better weather than the postponed February 13th event that was set to take place at the Historic Courthouse. A noon ceremony will be followed by an informal reception at the Lincoln Plaza on the Square if weather allows; otherwise, it will be held in the lobby of the new Montgomery County Courthouse Complex, adhering to appropriate social distancing guidelines.    All but one of the twenty towns in the county have wooden spools that will be converted to county birthday cakes. Taylor Springs is expected to have a spool before the week is out. Farmersville has rolled out an Irish themed cake and a three-tiered cake with dozens of pictures of county history can be found outside the Historic Courthouse in Hillsboro.   Jeff Dunn is also preparing murals of historic photos to be placed on some of the plain brick walls in downtown Hillsboro.    The main Bicentennial event   June 5th at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds in Butler also continues to take shape.    The Arts & Crafts building will house each town’s historical display, the Historical Society’s displays, the historical medical/dental display and a joint display by the libraries of the county. The county’s historical family information will also be located there.     There is plenty of space for more food and merchandise booths, and Bicentennial planners would like more craft or other merchandise vendors, stressing “made in Montgomery County”.   There will also be a play by Pat Brink and they are still looking for 1 or 2 bands. The tractor/antique car/farm implements/emergency vehicles display will be in the expo area of the fairgrounds along with a Car Cruise-In. Woodcarving artist Chris Hubbart will also show off his talents, carving a Lady Justice statue during the June Fifth event. That statue could then be placed at the Historic Courthouse throughout the summer and eventually sold or auctioned by Chris.   There will also be a Montgomery County sheriff canine demonstration, an area for children’s games, a petting zoo, a cake-walk, old-fashioned games such as a 3-legged race, pitching horseshoes and more..   .
