Illinois Crop Progress and Prospective Planting Report

In the latest Illinois Crop Progress and Condition report. Statewide the average temperature was 45.4 degrees, 5 degrees above normal for the month of March. Precipitation for the month averaged 4.06 inches, 1.31 inches above normal. As of Sunday, March 28th, topsoil moisture supply was rated at 1 percent very short, 5 percent short, 65 percent adequate, and 29 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture was rated at 1 percent very short, 8 percent short, 75 percent adequate, and 16 percent surplus. The Winter wheat condition was rated at 6 percent very poor, 4 percent poor, 20 percent fair, 54 percent good, and 16 percent excellent.
In the prospective plantings report for the state, corn growers intend to plant 10.9 million acres this spring, down 4 percent from last year. Soybean planted area is expected to be 10.7 million acres, 4 percent higher than 2020. Winter wheat seeded area last fall is estimated at 700,000 acres, up 23 percent from the previous year. Area planted to oats is expected to total 60,000 acres, unchanged from 2020, and producers intend to harvest 450,000 acres of all hay in 2021, down 8 percent from 2020.
